These are but a few things Basketmouth has achieved today, but life hasn't always been this rosy for Bright Okpocha. In fact he was never given a chance at success.
Bright ‘Basketmouth’
Okpocha was born in Uzor street, Ajegunle, Lagos, Nigeria on the 14th of
September, 1978 as the 3rd child in a family of nine.
At age 13, he started his first
art, drumming but FAILED.
At age 16, he ventured into Rap
music but FAILED.
At age 17, he formed a music
group called Da Psychopaths
which also FAILED.
After the failure of Da
Psychopaths, he immediately formed
D ODDZ with his brother
Godwin and friend Muyiwa Osunrobi but still FAILED.
Bright never gave up
he kept searching for what he could do till he discovered his talent in comedy
while emulating Eddie Murphy and Ali Baba on Television. His comedy would have
failed as his was booed off stage on his first show, but he went back, did his
research, had a comeback and won the hearts of all the audiences he came
across.
Soon, Basketmouth was
making his name in comedy but not money. BASKETMOUTH was so broke that he once
begged rapper SixFootPlus for sixty naira (#60) as transport fair home from a
show. He was so broke, he once lived in the Yaba Railway Station amongst
hooligans and thouts but never lost sight of his goal and drive.
Today, Basketmouth
is arguably the most popular comedian in Nigeria with shows all over the UK.
Now he is making his money, Basketmouth is the first person to order a
customized 2013 opel insignia automobile from Africa. In my opinion his story
should be made into book to touch millions of lives but before you write a book
in Nigeria there are lots of factors to be considered but thats a story for
another day.
Well, i know most
of you were not born in Ajegunle, have never visited a Nigerian railway station
not to mention living in it, you have never been so broke as to beg for 60
naira. So, the question is why won't you be successful?
In life, i have
found out that it is not what you don't have that limits you, it is what you
have that you can't use that does. Keep working, keep improving yourself and
oneday you would be living a life better than your dreams.
